Personally I don't define retirement as the date or age that somebody takes their Social Security and whatever the amount is/will be.  This question is limited as you can retire before taking social security and wait until the optimal time before taking it.  We should not count on SS for fully funding retirement and everyone needs to save.

The real outrage: after 40 plus working years and paying into 'the system' seniors expect to get more than the pittance many end up getting that in many cases isn't a livable amount yet the politicians expect many seniors to live on basically 'chump change'. Social Security has been raided for years by the politicians using it as their personal 'slush fund ' for other projects and never repay what they've stolen, that's right, I said 'stolen' ( definition: taking what doesn't belong to you ). This along with the scammers getting benefits to which they're not entitled as they've never paid a dime into the coffer will deplete this fund if something drastic isn't done soon. As they say, elections, like everything in life has consequences and what's going on in DC now is the result of people not doing their due diligence when election time rolls around. Who among us doesn't know a politician that isn't 'self serving ' only and will say and anything to get elected?

wow what one deals with to collect social security and how you work and still can't get what you put into it, when my husband passed i could only get 30% of his social security because i was not at the right age to get 100% percent and that hurt me, but i learned how to keep going, thats why at 71 i'm still working and paying into social security but i keep going

I'm not anti immigrant as a grandchild of immigrants who came to America and did it the right way: they learned English, became US citizens, got jobs and didn't get a dime when they got here but realized they had the privilege and opportunity for better lives here in America. I was referring to those who come here illegally, from wherever they come and never become citizens and expect all kinds of handouts. Living in California I've become a bit of an expert on this.

I certainly hope we all get social security and get paid off for our 40 quarters+ of hard work.

Though I was curious if there was people in non-US countries that can comment on the following question, which is:

Does your country offer something like social security? Or do most countries just expect people to save up enough towards retirement and take care of themselves? If there's no social security, are company pensions normal in your country?

Not to be a downer but most social security payments are pitiful compared to how much you contributed over your working years. .On the other hand the thieves running this program need all they can get for all the unqualified lying scammers and leeches who've never paid into this fund who're draining the system by getting benefits.. And this BS of social security and medicare to non citizens, absolutely not! The idiots who proposed this should be fired for ineptitude but that likely won't happen given what's going on in DC right now.  Since when are non citizens who aren't permitted to work here legally and thus never paid a dime into the coffer entitled to any of this? I'd like a sensible and reasonable answer to this and I 'm sure I'm not alone. Seniors are expected to live on these for the most part chump change monthly checks, what a joke! Time to put the senior citizens who for most part worked hard all their lives first instead of the leeches and bums.  To some this might come off as ****** but I really don't give a rats tukus as I have to live on a social security check that's less than livable. This isn't racism, this is about putting Americans first for once instead of everybody else. And the real outrage, the COLA'S cost of living increases are a disgrace, basically crumbs that don't do a damned thing.

I am sorry that you feel the source of your misfortune falls squarely in the lap of undocumented immigrants. But I would ask you, what data do you have to substantiate the claim that these folks "never paid a dime into the coffer?" The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has an extenstive report on this topic. Undocumented immigrants contribute 7+billion dollars a year to SS and yet they DO NOT receive the benefit. I'm not suggesting that a problem with regard to immigration is not exisitent. It certainly needs quite a bit of work to say the least. But I merely want to point out that your comment is steeped in "otherism", misdirected blame and does not address the issue of a failed immigration system that has never successfully been dealth with by any administration when in power. Many of the services that Americans take for granted, come as a result of hard working immigrants who simply want a better way of life. Just like everyone else who came to this country through Ellis Island, fleeing tryany in search of a better life. Consider that when you eat your fruits, vegetables and have a nice clean room in many hotels across America. Take some time to pause and reflect on the decisions you've made in the past, and the misfortune of circumstances beyond your own control that have you where you are. This problem didn't begin with undocumented immigrants and the end doesn't point to them either.

I PLAN to retire and collect Social Security after my birth year (1981) so that I can take advantage of the increased benefit amount available for delaying collecting. That is, unless I become a multi-millionaire, then well.. I'll reconsider retirement LOL. If there is no Social Security at my planned retirement age, that's okay also. By God's Blessing I knew to start contributing to my 401k in my early 20s, so, prayerfully, I'll be able to have pleasant retirement years.
