When a penny is heads up - I pick it up for luck! Not logical at all, but I’ve been doing it since I was a kid.

Ever since my parents passed on, I like to think that when I see a penny that it’s a penny from heaven. I have been collecting them and have placed them in a cute little trinket. I even narked it as “Mom and Dad’s Pennies from Heaven”. The funny thing is that when I go for walks I say , ok mom, send me a penny to know you’re thinking of me. And guess what. Almost every time I say that I actually find a penny!

When I was four years old, my neighbor said something that stuck with me. "Pennies add up to dimes, and dimes add up to dollars." I'm forty years old now and still pick up money whenever I find it, even if it's only a penny, because I've internalized that mentality. I'm on SSDI but I always seem to have enough money for my needs and some wants. A German proverb says "Take care of the pfennings and the farthings will take care of themselves," and it's true. But I'm preaching to the choir here.

I also got that saying from a neighbor growing up. Still collect the stray change that has been so easily discarded by others. Goes into change jar...

I always pick up spare change I find, and save all my change! It all goes into an empty 2 liter soda bottle that I cleaned out, and when it’s full, I’ll put it towards a vacation or something else special.

I always pick up money I find in my journeys. I have found 5cents already today! I have found a few $10 & $20s over the years too, its very exciting. I like to save my 'found money' for travel (along with money I win from contests too). Here we also have deposits on bottle returns, so my kids pick up bottles & donate the money every few months to a children's charity that has helped my son in the past. A couple quotes that have stuck with me from years ago are: Suze Ormond - 'If you...

Vivian and I pick up all pennies we find on the ground. In 1984, the year we were married, we found $16.00 in pennies. Last year, 2018, we found $24.00 in pennies. It's varied throughout the years, but we love doing it, just to see how much money people throw away. I totaled it up, and for 35 years, we've gotten $497.00 in pennies. Just imagine how much we made in quarters, dimes and nickels. The old saying by Benjamin Franklin, "A penny saved is a penny earned", is correct. If I'm wrong...

We have several huge black garbage bags full of aluminum cans. We've also got some tin cans in other bags. We used to go "canning" along the roads in GA where we lived and I made on the average of $ 150.00 per week doing that. That was back when aluminum cans were selling for 64 cents a lb. Now they're not anywhere near that! Tin cans are only about three cents a lb now. But, every little bit helps. We also pick up used car and lawn mower batteries. Like my grandfather always said...if...

@AverageJoe I was going to say, that is the quote I think of every time I see a penny on the ground. Because of that I always pick up any money I find. I like how some people on here actually kept track of how much money they picked up, something I think I will start doing!

What a delightful conversation. I usually pick up pennys when heads up, but sometimes, it's just not practical. For those times I cannot pick it up, I always thank God for the blessing and ask that it be passed on to someone in need. Respecting money means respect for all forms of money from pennies to dollars to hundreds! It all counts!

In response to a previous post where a couple saved money found all year in a jar then cashed it out at the end of the year - my husband and I started this yesterday for 2019. We have one jar for change we find on our walks, bike rides, etc. and another jar for misc change we empty from our pockets, etc. I'll post on Dec 31 how much we collected for the year! Will be interesting.

Many people just walk over them. I actually heard that if you were to figure the value of your time it costs you more to pick up that penny then to continue on. I myself ignore that and pick up although I've never thought to keep a total. I have heard winter is the best time to find money and rings because of gloves, people fumbling with them taking them off and fumbling with change. Sad on the rings but happy on the money.

Lately my husband and I have been finding so much stray change on the ground we decided to place into a separate bowl to see out of curiosity what it would come to at the end of the year. Near the end of 2018 we were out walking our dogs before a big snowstorm and my dog was over by a tree so I walked over there and what looked like a green leaf was actually a $10. Very cool. We started a separate bowl now in 2019. So do you keep that change or throw it and make a wish?😊

I love finding stray change. Pennies, nickles, dimes or more! I usually put it in a container, and then I put it in money folders and use it to pay rent or buy what I need. No, I don't make a wish.

We don't make a wish, either. A penny saved (or found) is a penny earned. My wife works for a logistics company as a lead person, and she found a $5.00 bill in an area of the plant. She asked if anyone had lost some money, and had everyone check....nobody could identify the amount, so she kept the money and we set it aside. She used it for gas in the car that night, which was a Wednesday. She usually stops and gets gas at Wal-Mart's Neighborhood Market, but, because it was so much less...

I have a knack for seeing change everywhere . My spouse jokes that it's a superpower (or to reference Seinfeld, "You’re eating onions, you’re spotting dimes, I don’t know what the heck's going on!") Also stopped at a stop sign one day to see a $5 bill by the curb-- I absolutely jumped out to get it. Usually find coins in parking lots though. We've also found a nickle from the 1920s which might increase in value some day. Combined with the change from cash spending, we've got around $25...

I learned to do this from my father who lived through the depression era. He also taught me the value of saving my loose change. I have a jar that when it fills up I take to those coin disposal machines and turn into a cash payout periodically which I can use to buy groceries. I also when I am walking notice and pick up any coins spilled on the floor and because I also clean up the trash, I have found bills too just tossed away carelessly with the trash. I am also not walking with my phone...

A (tightwad) friend of mine used to laugh that his wife would push an angel out of the way to pick up a penny. I said, "Yeah, so she could watch you squeeze it." Seriously, if you ever heard Lincoln holler, it was probably because of my friend. He's gone now. At the funeral the preacher, who didn't know him but had interviewed his family and other friends, talked mostly about his "stinginess" -- he said, "You thought he was stingy, but he was teaching us all a lesson." He was too frugal. But...

Though it's hard to bend to pick up a penny for both my wife and myself, we BOTH still do so. You would be amazed at how many people throw pennies out onto the ground every week. For us, a penny SAVED, rescued and even lent to us and never asked for in return ends up being worth it.
