Thank you all for welcoming me to the community. I’ve had a blast hanging out this week and can’t wait to get to know more of you.
December is always a special month at The Penny Hoarder HQ. First, we celebrated The Penny Hoarder’s 9th Birthday at our HQ this week with champagne and donuts. *Cue the birthday song* Here’s to many more years to come!
We held our Brews & Side Gigs event at our HQ on December 4, and were thrilled that community member @Moore Income was able to join us (see photo below). We love being able to interact with you all at our in-person events, so we hope more of our community members will join us at future events.
I’ve been spending this week preparing for our company holiday party. I have a lot of fun surprises planned that I think our team will just love. Does anyone have any fun holiday happenings taking place at their office? Or, better yet, how do you like to spend the holidays? I’d love to hear some holiday favorites in the comments below.
And speaking of the holidays, we published our 2019 holiday gift guide this week. With Christmas quickly approaching, we know how challenging it can be to come up with some fun gift ideas. We partnered with some of our favorite brands to put together a list of things to give and share. Whether you want to gift an experience, score a deal on something you can wrap up under the tree or give yourself (and those you love!) the gift of financial peace of mind, we found something for everyone. Check out our 2019 Holiday Gift Guide now!
Without further ado, here’s a very special weekly round up of announcements….
We are thrilled to welcome @Leslie Kay as our latest Penny Hoarder MVP! Leslie joined the community back in May and has been an invaluable contributor, starting a variety of interesting discussions across various topics and being a steady source of support to her fellow members. We congratulate and thank Leslie for being our newest MVP!
We are also very happy to announce that @AverageJoe has become a part of our Welcome Committee! In his role, he will be focused on greeting new members and helping them get oriented in the community. Thank you, @AverageJoe, for supporting our new members by making them feel at home and pointing them in the right direction.
Last, but not least, we have a new Member of the Month! @redcatcec (Claudia) is from Essex, Maryland and joined us back in July. We are so happy to see her enthusiasm for personal finance topics in her recent contributions across various threads. Thank you, Claudia, and congrats!
As another week comes to a close, let's recap this week’s most talked about threads and a couple that can use some love:
This week’s most talked about threads:
@Leon sparked a great conversation about eliminating credit card debt, and whether it’s a good idea to take out a personal loan with a low interest rate to do this. Has anyone paid off credit card debt recently? Consider chimining in.
These Penny Hoarders need your help:
@slynnh25 brought up a great discussion on whether or not cover letters are still relevant. Has anyone had a recent experience where their cover letter did (or did not) come in handy? Leave a comment and help this Penny Hoarder out! If you work in HR or as a recruiter, we’d love to hear from you too.
Our fellow member @Cali_Karley is planning a trip from California to Georgia to see her good friend get married. We all know how expensive flights can get! This Penny Hoarder asked if anyone was familiar with Southwest Airlines point system and if anyone had any additional tips to travel in a budget-friendly manner. For those of you flying on a budget, can we help this member out?
Before I sign-off….
We wouldn’t be Penny Hoarders if we didn’t figure out a way to optimize spending and maximize savings. We have a roundup of our favorite cashback apps. Definitely check this article out before you spend anything online this holiday season.
Till next week!
