Hi, I have missed this group dearly over the last 2 months! I'm trying to catch up on all the great posts I have missed. I thought I would share a few ways I was able to save some money while my 10yr old son was in the hospital for 52days. I did get a few days warning that he would be going in for 2 weeks so that the doctors could adjust his feeds & medications, unfortunately things didn't go as hopped & we ended up being there for 7.5weeks! Because I had some warning this was going...Read More...

Easy Christmas money

Betty Kay Ramsey
I started putting $10.00 in quarters in a piggy bank each month, plus all leftover change from breaking bills. Every December I take the change to the bank to convert it to dollars. I usually have around $200.00. It's a little change in behavior, but it really helps at Christmas time.Read More...

Saving on Hair Salon services

Forum: Save Money
saversue
Hi, I moved to Southern IN, 7 yrs ago and was interested in saving money on my hair services. I looked online for cosmetology schools in my area and found 1 that was 10 minutes away! This is a school where students learn about all types of the hair care process, manicures, pedicures, brow waxing, facials, and many more services. They are under staff supervision at all times, are friendly, outgoing and eager to learn. They offer these services to the public at a discounted rate and so I made...Read More...
Great reminder, thanks! We have a cosmetology school here, and I just have not utilized them. I have used the massage students FREE practice sessions, and let me tell you , it was fantastic.Read More...
That is an awesome tip, @saversue ! It reminds me of some similar ways to cut costs. We had a dental assistant training school in our area that discounted services. I also had a friend going through massage therapy school and she needed volunteers to practice on while in school and I had a few free massages(yep, the message student is a more pleasant thought than a dental assistant student!) Also, the University of Florida at one time offered discounted dental services if a parent had a...Read More...

Side Hustles

Forum: Make Money
Kirsten Cherry
I was first introduced to the concept of a “side hustle” when I saw a YouTube video by The Penny Hoarder talking about them. I was beyond intrigued. I followed a link to one of their articles about different side hustles you can do to make extra cash. I swear there were over 100 options and as soon as I started reading it, I began signing up for nearly all of them. It took hours and has been so worth it. That article has changed my outlook on money and how to spend and save properly. I...Read More...

I try different side hustles at all times I keep 3 or 4 going to allow me more money to pay down my credit card balances. They have gotten out of control and some of them even got closed on me. Teacher Budgeting for the Summer

Forum: Budgeting
TiffanyConnors
Any teachers (or spouses of teachers) out there with tips for budgeting for the summer months? My husband is finishing his first year as an elementary school teacher, and we're preparing for 10 weeks without his paycheck. (His school doesn't offer the option to spread the payments throughout the year.) We've saved throughout the year to cover our basic expenses, but I'm wondering how other teachers adjust their budgets for the summer months. Thanks!Read More...

Senior Couple drowning in debt

Forum: Debt
We are in our late 60s but in good health and are drowning in debt. Our only asset is our home and what's in it. Car is leased. Our home is worth about $185,000.00 and we owe $72,000.00 on it plus have a home equity loan of $26,000.00. Our credit score is 700 and none of our many credit card and personal loan payments have ever been late. I have 1 personal loan of $85,000.00 from a friend at 6% interest that we now owe $29,000.00 for which the monthly pmt is $1,000.00. We need to pay this...Read More...
I just went through this, with a lot more equity in my house and quite a bit lower debt. The reverse mortgage is a pretty complicated vehicle, but the main thing is, looking at your numbers, you probably won't get any cash out at closing if you do qualify. Basically, your existing debt, mortgage and equity line, would be paid off as part of the process. The amount of reverse mortgage available depends on a formula using your appraised home value (you'll pay for the appraisal), your age (age...Read More...
Birdman: You may have problems with a reverse mortgage. My understanding is that a home needs to be paid in full which my math is showing to be $98K (72+26) between current balance and equity loan. While your equity (assuming full market value, not including fees or interest) amounts to $87K, you may or may not qualify for another equity loan it would only shuffle debt, not really pay it since you are talking about $80k in unsecured debt. Bankruptcy may or may not be an option but be aware...Read More...

Would You Buy a "Tiny Home"?

Kirsten Cherry
My husband and I have been obsessed with tiny home living since we heard of it years ago. We always wanted to try it out, but then we had a kid and the thought of living in 200sq feet with a toddler sounds horrendous! But there are still "tiny" homes out there that are just big tiny homes! I'm talking under 1000sq ft for a family. It's not something people in the home-buying process usually look for, but it definitely intrigues us! Would you move to a 960 sq foot house?Read More...
I would. Right now I am looking to downsize to a 400 sq foot apartment. (If I thought I could make it work and thought it would cost less in rent, I would go for a smaller space.) Once I get all my debt paid off and save up enough to pay cash for a house, I plan on purchasing one. Depending upon the route I take, I might get a house that is around 960 - 1,000 sq feet and run it as a bed and breakfast OR I might get a small 400 or less sq foot house just for myself. I would have the living...Read More...

Jail Problems

I work in poor communities and one of the issues they have that no one wants to talk about are the financial problems born primarily by the poor communicating with an incarcerated loved one. We live in literally the worst time in U.S. and world history for imprisoning the poor. The United States now imprisons more people than any other country in the world and in the history of the world. Here's the numbers: 650 people for every 100,000 people. We have 327.2 million people in the U.S. I am...Read More...

Are jail inmates allowed to have a phone? I doubt it. But I'll check. The families that qualify usually have the phones. This does not reduce the costs for most people. Most are working class families, living a few bucks above the poverty line. Those three million people in jail all have families, most work. Many of these people are innocent. That's why they have organizations like the Innocence Project. Thank you for your reply and your suggestion! I do appreciate it. Our prisons for profit...Read More...

How much car insurance do I need?

Forum: Insurance
Grace Schweizer
I currently pay more than I would like for car insurance. When I originally bought my policy a couple of years ago, I added a lot of coverage that I'm not sure I even need, and at the time, I didn't qualify for many discounts. I'm ready to make the call, shop around and see what I can do about bringing my rate down, but I want to be able to go into the conversation informed. What kinds of coverage do I really need? What kinds of discounts should I ask for? I don't necessarily want to go bare...Read More...

Tell me about Stash and Aspiration

Patricia Jernigan
(Hi all! First time on here.) Those of you who use either one of these--or both--what can you tell me about them? Other than what their websites do, I mean. Where Else Can I Cut Expenses?

Jim F
I just signed up for medical benefits through my employer but the weekly cost is significant: $160 a week! (I remember when it was $85 a month). So this equates to over $600 a month out of my paycheck. So we are looking to cut back on expenses. I pay nearly $200 to (the evil) Sprint for our two phones. I'm looking to move to Consumer Celluar and the total cost for the two phones should be $55 a month. But I need to call Sprint. Insurance costs us $440 a month which covers two cars and three...Read More...
I would find a new cell Phone service. I use Consumer Cellular.I pay 55 a month for 2 lines. Then ditch the landline.I would then cut the cord for your TV . I still use them for my internet. I use an antenna and stream Hulu and use my Amazon for streaming . Get a Ruko for that set it up to your TV you are good to go. I would then shop around for your insurance needs. This can be done on the internet. There is also lots of free streaming channels to choose from.Read More...
I need to check out that T-Mobile deal. That sounds really great. I hope they will allow us to bring our own devices. As for YouTube TV, that was a pig in a poke. The streaming from a PC to our TV resulted in stuttered streaming with no close captioning. It may come down to a combination of NetFlix, Hulu, Prime Video and CBS All Access. But you still have to have an Internet connection to view all of this. My 19-year-old son, an attorney in the making, is going to deal with Sprint later this...Read More...
