Thanks for sharing such a comprehensive list! I did check on the DCU website and it does actually say there is a $5 minimum. Not that it makes a huge difference but just sharing what I saw. I have also used Aspiration which pays a 1% APY with no minimum or fees. I am also trying out the Haven Money savings account which pays 2% APY and up to 4% if you refer enough people.Read More...

I had smoked since I was 13, and having attempted to quit many times, the rising costs of cigarettes was concerning me greatly. I formulated a plan to weaning off cigarettes with the oncoming of e-cigs, but with a new incentive. Invest the money I would save on each daily purchase. To cement my earnestness I withdrew $3,000 and invested it through Vanguard into a health account. In the first weekend I found the e-cigs to be harmful to my throat and quit them immediately. I would do this cold...Read More...
Interested to know if anyone out there is using any savings account apps to save money. I personally have been using GRAND for a while now. They charge $2 a month but as long as you save money, every week they have a drawing and every week I have won $1. They pay a 1% interest rate. It has been a great way to save money without really noticing it is not in my checking anymore. I have also used Aspiration which pays a decent amount and am trying out the Empower app. Anyone else know of any...Read More...

I have been using The Ally banking/savings app for a few months and have been quite happy. I have a checking and a savings account. The savings account currently earns 2.2% and has gone up twice since opening the account. I use the checking account to save for known upcoming expenses and the savings I am using for emergency fund. Also, there are no fees.Read More...
I got sucked into the cryptocurrency storm late 2017 and started trading as well through a good part of 2018 as well. I did cash out some of my investments and now I am eager to learn it's impact on my tax return. Anyone here who has been involved in cryptocurrency over the past year or so? -SidRead More...

I have only watched from afar, but it's funny you mention the impact on your tax return as I was just doing my tax organizer online for my accountant last week. I was surprised by the question that asked if any of my investments last year were in crypto, and it was like a lightbulb moment. I hadn't even thought about having to report those investments on your taxes! For now, I'm glad I can skip that section.Read More...

I learned how to cook Asian food at home--pretty easy to do since I work in an Asian restaurant--and no, I'm not a cook. You can whip up a pretty good meal with rice, vegetables, soy sauce, fish sauce, and eggs. Fish sauce might be hard to find, but I know Amazon has it. And I live in Indianapolis but can find it in the corner grocery store. Fish sauce is key to giving your fried rice that "takeout" taste.Read More...
Feel free to drop any kinds of ways you've been able to save money in this thread as well! I have one -- I go to a grocery store near me (Lucky's Market) on Wednesdays specifically because all of their produce and rotisserie chicken is significantly marked down! Then I have all of my food to prep for the week. It's reduced my grocery bill by almost half.Read More...
There are a few key factors to focus on if you want to know how to start a blog. However, starting a blog is one thing, turning it profitable is quite another. There is a huge difference between a click, a visitor and a buyer. The first and most important step of starting a blog as a professional blogger is discovering your profitable niche. When you start your first blog, it is also important to create order by using separate folders. And to start a successful blog you need to create these...Read More...
Hey Penny Hoarders, For the longest time, I thought that investing was reserved for the financial elite. I didn't really understand the terminology and it just sounded too complicated to be worth my time. A year after starting investing, I now know so much more and I'm happier (and wealthier) because of it. Investing is the best (and most effortless) way to create wealth. I've written down some thoughts for people who are also only starting out on their investment journey. You can find it...Read More...

Hi Penny Hoarders! As a means to better track my own spending and sort our my financial priorities, I recently developed a budgeting Excel sheet that is unique in several ways: 1. It allows you to select your currency and year (making it customizable based on where you live and a template that you can use year on year) 2. The overview page allows you to enter your budgeted amounts and has hyperlinked buttons for each month of the year, allowing you to hop around and see how your spending has...Read More...

I liken budgeting to weight loss regimens. Knowing that the feeling of deprivation often leads to failure - does anyone have any tactics to weave rewards into the budgeting or saving process that are motivators (& reprieves) to stay on track? Or, is this just a bad idea that leads to self-sabotage and disaster? Discuss!Read More...
I have an LLC for my freelance writing/editing work, and for a few years I've had a separate checking account for those funds. I recently realized that I don't have enough cash in the account to have the monthly "maintenance" fee waived - so I'm losing $15 a month! I know my freelance business hasn't been super busy these days, but I'd certainly like to hold on to most of the money I've earned, you know? I'd love to hear about your experiences with online-only checking accounts for your side...Read More...
Hmm... That's a great question. Currently I know about a lot of personal online checking accounts but I haven't really looked into business accounts. I've heard a lot of people talking about this lately, and I wonder if there's a way for my family to follow suit. I'd love to hear from anyone who has let go of cable for a cheaper alternative -- specifically, the logistics of exactly what you replaced it with and how much it costs / how much you saved. We only watch cable for two things: 1. Nightly news 2. Weekend soccer matches featuring UK teams We pay a crazy amount just to get these weekend soccer matches. @Theodora I have run across them. Can't say I have looked into them much although I do plan to in the near future. @Theodora what kind of investing are you interested in? I know you can find a lot of resources on the web and YouTube videos that talk about specific kinds of investing. You gotta be careful with some of these though because some people really don't know what they are talking about. I personally like to learn as I go and watch a lot of YouTube videos on specific types of investments (ie. stocks, real estate, etc.) I use a lot of investment apps that are pretty straightforward for making...Read More...
I'm nervous about the solidity of some online-only banks, but there is the carrot of fabulous interest rates. I noticed the app discussed recently at Penny Hoarder, the Empower app, is FDIC insured up to $250,000. I'm interested in getting as much interest as possible on reserve cash, as anyone, but am I being overcautious here? How much confidence should we have in these online-only banks?Read More...
@Former Member Good question. I personally am just testing most of them to see howh they work and such and I usually just start with a set amount. I have moved money between a couple due to a better interest rate but I haven't really added much to the accounts besides the initial deposits. I am starting to add more to My Haven account since they have a 2% interest rate (up to 4% if you refer people) they also allow me to connect all my other accounts to manage my money in one place. So...Read More...

@Moore Income how do you strategize what money goes into what account, and how do you stay organized? I recently consolidated some of my cash and closed some extraneous accounts, mostly for simplicity's sake. How do you maximize your 6 checking accounts?Read More...
I definitely think it is worth it. I don't put all my eggs in one basket anyway, even when it comes to just a checking account, so why not get as much interest as is available. My mentor defines an asset as something that is putting money in your pocket on a monthly basis. A liability on the other hand takes money out. With that in mind he asked me once if the stocks I owned we're an asset or a liability. I instantly said asset, but the more I thought about it, the more I wondered. I decided to take a look at the stocks I had bought through the Stash app and I was surprised to find most of my stocks paid me 0 in dividends. I then found one that paid a small...Read More...

Almost everyone I know likes to travel, but few people do it much. One of the primary reasons for this is the lack of finances. But if done right and properly planned, there are ways to travel without spending a ton of money. My wife and I have been able to go quite a few places although we don't have a ton of money, we just have to plan well ahead of time. So I figured it would be a good idea to start this thread for people to talk about ways they personally save money on travel and for...Read More...
