Can Drinking Coffee Affect Your Finances?

Can Coffee Affect Your Finances a post by Jon from Moore Income Blog

Today I am sitting at a coffee shop working away on my computer before I head to my job.

But instead of purchasing a coffee from the shop, I brought my own coffee from home.

Why you may ask? Because a cup of coffee can cost upwards of $5.

I am a huge coffee drinker but $5 cups of coffee tend to add up over time and before you know it, you have spent quite a bit on a cup of jo!

I have started coming here regularly and have noticed there are people who come in every morning to buy a cup of coffee! I can’t help but wonder how expensive that gets after a while!

Are you a coffee drinker? How much do you spend on coffee a week?

Do you buy from a coffee shop or make your own?

Would you stop drinking coffee if it had a significant impact on your finances?

Once in awhile I’ll buy me a large cappuccino
and bring it home and I slit it with one of the
kids or hub by. I can’t drink coffee to much I
get sick from it.

I like my tea. The funny thing is when my
hubby was in the hospital last year and
I had to buy my meal which was usually
beagles in the morning and milk cream cheese
and jelly. It was $3 a day for that. So I found out
that the cafeteria had microwaves and different
drinks for free. So what I did was have the kids
buy me a cooler it held a half gallon of milk and
i brought milk got ice free from the hospital and
I brought different foods from the dollar tree and
walmart that I could eat while hubby was in icu.
It saved me allot of money. So once in awhile I
would buy me a hot meal.

I think it’s safe to say yest it could @moore.income. But then it’s also worth it. Although I’m more domesticated so I have coffee at home. Although I do enjoy a good cup of coffee on lengthy trips, usually to the Bush-veld. I do however spend quite a bit on coffee (late nights writing), one of the higher expenses on my grocery budget along with milk and sugar.

I too enjoy a nice cappuccino now and then @bonnie.squires. Although I do prefer my home made coffee.

I agree @bonnie.squires. A pot on the stove is always best. Back in the day, growing up on a farm. We always had a pot of “Rooibos Tea” along with the coffee pot on the coal stove. Much simpler times back then.

DEON CHRISTIE ok that’s weird up till i
was 6 years old our house was on a farm.
We didn’t own it but we could go and get
all the potatoes we wanted. Sad thing now
is that its house open house. No more farms.
All so the house is worth millions of dollars
today.

I live in a development that offers free coffee Monday through Saturday. Thus, I will not buy it. I don’t even get coffee with my groceries so I have some to drink on Sunday. I just take an extra cup of coffee with me. I am wondering how you can sit at a coffee shop without buying coffee. I had no idea they allowed you to do that. Very nice. If coffee was taking a chunk out of my finances, I would have to stop.

@mskimberly well that is a nice perk to living there! I go to one of the Caribou chain coffee shops here in town.

I just walk in with my computer, a book, and my travel coffee mug and sit down on one of the chairs and work.

Nobody has ever come up to me and asked me to leave or told me anything was wrong with it.

I do sometimes buy coffee from them, just not in the morning because in the afternoon they have a “happy hour” which allows you to get coffee half off the original price. That is when I buy coffee! :)

at night you see people sitting outside on there phones and a

It definitely will dig into your finances, unless you drink free coffee.

I treat myself to Starbucks a couple of times a month…not excessive except that I make perfectly good coffee at home. But I do love the iced macchiatos and Starbucks happens to be in the same plaza as my grocery store. It’s not only a ding in my wallet but the calories are insane.

Haha @mintjulep I have to agree, the sugared coffees are good but they sure don’t help with staying healthy.

Because I am also trying to watch what I eat, it has helped me buy less of the sweet coffees and stick to just plain coffee… but I like it with milk or unsweetened cream because growing up that is how we drank it.

The health aspect of it also can be related to finances in the area of dental and other issues that arise from eating (or drinking) too much sugar.

I am glad I was able to cut soda out of my diet years ago!

MOORE INCOME i’m working on cutting out soda once again
all so cookies and candy to. its not easy. To when you have
kids that have jobs and buy it and ask if you want some
than its hard to say no. i’ve seen times where i told my son
no i didn’t want candy or soda and he looked hurt. he even
asked if i was ok. lol

Absolutely, it impacts my finances! And more than just the actual money, it impacts my attitude about spending. In my previous life (when I worked for myself and made twice what I make now) I had coffee out AT LEAST once a day. When I had to cut that out, I purchased a single serve maker. Yes, I know its not as inexpensive as a drip, but I wouldn’t bother with the drip, I’d find myself still going out. I now allow myself to buy coffee on Friday morning, or an OCCASIONAL splurge during the week. I found when I cut out the daily spending on coffee, I was also more aware of the other small things that I was spending my money on, and was able to reduce that as well. That’s made a big impact on my spending overall.

I can relate @kellyfromkeene It really does affect other areas when you pay attention to this small area.

I had been going 2 or 3 times a week but this month I decided to really cut back. My goal was not to buy any, but I did cave in recently and bought one, but it was mostly because I have been going to the coffee shop and using their WiFi every morning so I figured I should probably buy something or they might catch on and give me the boot.

Besides that, I have purchased one other coffee but that was with my gift card (from Member of the Month) so I don’t count that one.

I have also been bought coffee a couple times by a sibling or friend.

I almost bought another this morning but that little voice inside me wouldn’t let me do it. But it is hard not to, especially sitting in a coffee shop!

It was only going to be a $2 black coffee but I still couldn’t do it.

It is interesting how perspective changes when you start really paying attention to the little things!

Generally I make my own at home. But for a treat we hit Panera. I get gift cards in exchange for doing surveys, so there’s no out of pocket expenses, plus with a loyalty card they throw in free offers.

Great way to keep expenses low and occasionally reward yourself @olivia

I enjoy one latte from Starbucks every Monday. I use to stop every day, but then decided that I could (of course) use that money more wisely, so I changed that pattern. The rest of the days I make espresso or lattes at home.

I personally find that the best way to save my money is similar to that of maintaining a healthy weight: enjoy the things you like on occasion, so that they don’t end up being a splurge. Find the things that matter to you and those that don’t, and use those to guide your spending.
