I live in NYC and paying a lot for my car insurance, I recently purchased an weekend house in upstate NY, a friend just told me that if I change my address to my second home, my car insurance will reduce drastically.
Is this true? is it legal?

I Imagine that it is true, although I have no idea if it is legal. Why not, if you own it? I know people that register their cars at their second home here in NH because it’s much less expensive than MA or CT.
Yes - that is true and it is totally fine to do.
Also, there are some great options to get more efficient car insurance rates. Have you looked at The Zebra?
