I had a small success today. I added my gym membership to my husband’s account. I will save $20 a month, so $240 per year. I wish I’d done it earlier. Then I called my Internet company to see if we could get a better deal, but that was a no-go. And we dropped Hulu and CBS.com (which was through Amazon), which I’d completely forgotten I was still subscribed to. It pays to stay on top of these things.
LISMOX, Great savings for a days work. I called my cable company a few months ago and they did lower my cable/telephone/computer package from $250 to $200. They didn’t have any “current customer” offers but said if I call back in a couple of months they may. I forgot about it until now and you’ve inspired me to make that call. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Someone (I’m not sure, but I think it may have been on Penny Hoarder) wrote that if they won’t lower your bill, tell them you want to cancel at the end of the current billing cycle. They stated you will probably get a phone call to see what they can do to keep your business. If not, he said you can always cancel the cancellation near the end of the billing cycle. I guess it could be worth a shot. If they just had reasonable prices, people wouldn’t have to play these games with them and I would be a much happier customer.
Thanks for sharing this
This month I too reevaluated my monthly subscriptions to see which ones I was no longer using enough to rationalize still paying for
We spoke to our Internet provider (few options in our area) and they suggested a longer term commitment to lower the monthly costs. We called a second time and they said we may want to consider buying our own modem instead of renting. She even told us what we needed to look for. Every little bit helps.
Oh yes, when you notice a charge increases and you are not informed it will increase, go after them. This keeps happening to us with our newspaper subscription, we receive it Wed-Sun, home delivery. This is quarterly repeating charge on a credit card, the only thing on this cc. It went up, I called the paper subscription service line and they confirmed the charge went up. Nothing had changed in the service, the price of gas even went down, so why they up-charge? I threatened to discontinue the paper, they countered with a slightly lower charge, to me this was not acceptable, they eventually agreed to put it back to where it was. The alternative was to loose our account. Keep in mind when they have your money, they are not willing to return any of it, when they had the up-charge put on the cc, they extended the length of the subscription to compensate, they do the math. Be proactive, it’s your money.
